A warm welcome to a full day of introductory training in Matomo Tag Manager, an increasingly popular alternative to the web analytics tool Google Analytics, both for the private and public sector. The course is held via video conference.

The goal of the course

After the training, you should feel more confident in the Matomo Tag Manager interface.
You must be able to set up your own websites in the TagManager.
We will also share our best and latest experiences from our customers' installations.

Target group

This training is aimed at those who have a slightly more technical profile and who want to take a quick step forward within Matomo Tag Manager.

Previous knowledge

You should have an understanding of web analytics or have taken our introductory course. You should also know basic HTML and Javascript to be able to participate in all exercises during the day.

Agenda

Time: 9-17

Part 1: What is a Tag Manager and why whould we use it?

Exploring the reasons behind using a Tag Manager and its alternatives.  Are there any drawbacks to using a Tag Manager, and if so, what are they?

Part 2: How Tag Manager works technically and how to get Started

What is required to get started and how does it work technically? We will cover the basics and also demonstrate how you can simulate tracking in your web browser for virtually any website. 

Exercise: Get simulation of tracking started.

Part 3: Tags, triggers, and variables

These are the fundamentals of Tag Manager. We will examine each component individually and provide examples of how they interact. We will also practice setting up tracking.

Exercise: Create your first Tag, trigger and Variables. 

Part 4: Debugging 

We will offer tips on how to test and troubleshoot your tracking, using both the built-in debugger in Tag Manager and other debugging methods in your web browser. We will also cover version control and publishing within the Tag Manager.

Exercise: Debug your code: in the debugger, net work panel and console. 

Part 5: Event tracking

Event tracking is perhaps the most common implementation after setting up page views. We will guide you through the process of getting started with these in Matomo.

Exercise: Set up your first events. 

Part 6: Tracking, GDPR and cookies

We will talk about how to set up Matomo to comply with GDPR but also how to integrate it with your Cookie Consent Manager (CMP). Should you run Matomo without cookies or with Cookies? We will talk about the best practice and what it means in practice.

Exercise: Set up Cookie less tracking  by default and then set cookies when you have a consent.  

Part 7: Tips and tricks

We will share our best tips and tricks for improving the quality of the collected data. 

We will also share our snippet library for Matomos TagManager and give your some really powerful tools that will help you become a master in Tag Management.

Part 8: In-depth discussion and Q&A

This is a very appreciated and unique part of this course. Tomas Persson, possibly one of the most experienced Matomo Tag Manager technicians in the world, will be available to provide advanced answers to any tracking question you may have.
